Company NameUniversity of Tennessee Health Science Center
Position TitleBiomedical Data Science Intern
Company Information
The Division of Biostatistics in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, Tennessee is dedicated to improving health through the rigorous application of statistical science to biomedical research, with active work in statistical genetics, clinical trials, activity/streaming data analysis, and statistical computing. Since 2016, the division's Biomedical Data Science internship program has hosted over 22 interns from universities nationwide, with projects resulting in tangible research products such as software packages, methodological papers, and interactive web applications.
Duties and Responsibilities
Are you a summer intern interested in working on methods and tools for extracting information from large matrix-valued data (think very large
spreadsheets) that are common in modern biology? Examples include
technologies such as transcriptomics, metabolomics, and high-throughput
genetic screens. Almost all of our research work is done in Julia, so we
are very keen on working with someone with prior Julia experience. Interns will work on a research project that is expected to lead to a tangible research product such as software package or methodological paper.
Position Qualifications
Interested individuals must have strong programming skills in at least
one language (eg. R, Python, Julia, C/C++, SAS), possess basic data
analysis skills, and have a willingness to learn biomedical science. Applicants should possess a relevant (eg. statistics, mathematics, computer science) bachelor’s or master’s degree; undergraduate students must be rising juniors or seniors.
