The Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of 28 tenured and tenure-track faculty members with strong expertise in the areas of algebra and combinatorics, fixed point theory, statistics, bioinformatics, computational science, topology, data science applied mathematics and mathematics/statistics education. Notable accomplishments of the productive faculty include publication of high-impact peer-reviewed manuscripts and annual research expenditures of $1.2M. A major addition to Department’s programs is the Data Science PhD program which launched in 2021 and has already produced graduates. The Department also contributes to interdisciplinary programs across the University including the Bioinformatics and Computational Science graduate programs in the College of Science.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking data scientists with expertise in Big Data Analytics/Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence/Statistical Modeling and/or High-Performance Data Analytics for an open rank faculty position. Successful candidates are expected to develop productive research programs, mentor and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and to direct Ph.D. dissertations in data science. Candidates with experience in industry and/or applied interdisciplinary research projects are encouraged to apply. Anticipated start date is fall 2027.

Position Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in statistical/mathematical data science or a related field, a strong record of research accomplishments and the capacity to secure extramural funding. For recent PhDs, preference will be given to those with postdoctoral experience.
