The Center, established in 2015 through the generous support of Richard and Susan Smith, is the first center of its kind among the Harvard hospitals, and leverages the deep expertise of its faculty members in the areas of observational research methods, comparative effectiveness research, prediction modeling, cost-effectiveness evaluation, and clinical trials.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Smith Center for Outcomes Research in the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA is seeking applications for an institutionally guaranteed faculty position. In this role, the individual will serve as the primary consulting statistician for the research group and will be given the opportunity to pursue individual interests in the field as well as support other principal investigator activities. The candidate should have a PhD with expertise in relevant statistical methodology including advanced causal inference methods, prediction model development and validation, survival analysis, and multilevel modeling, and should be fluent with programming in statistical packages such as SAS, STATA and/or R. The successful candidate should also have an established track record of scholarly achievement. A successful track record of grant writing is also critical.
The candidate must have an established record in clinical trial design and regulatory submission support, including hands-on experience developing Statistical Analysis Plans (SAPs), Tables, Listings, and Figures (TLFs), and analysis datasets for FDA submission packages. Additionally, they should possess a proven track record of leveraging real-world data, demonstrated by extensive experience with CMS claims data, both in-house and via the VRDC platform, and a documented history of working with large cardiovascular registries such as NCDR and AHA registries.
The candidate will also bring a well-documented history of executing three-way data linkages across clinical trials, registries, and CMS claims data to effectively integrate diverse data sources. They should demonstrate established expertise in applying advanced causal inference and statistical methodologies, including but not limited to: transportability and generalizability methods to extend clinical trial findings to target real-world populations; target trial emulation to estimate comparative effectiveness using observational data by addressing baseline confounding and immortal time bias; external control arm construction using real-world data to augment or replace control arms in randomized studies; and surrogate outcome development and validation using registry and claims data compared to adjudicated clinical trial outcomes. This comprehensive skill set will support long-term outcomes evaluation and post-marketing safety surveillance for cardiovascular devices and medications.
Position Qualifications
An academic teaching appointment at the level of Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School (HMS) will be commensurate with experience. The applicant is expected to be actively engaged in teaching fellows, residents, medical students and nurse practitioners-in-training.
