University of California Santa Cruz – Postdoctoral Scholar

Company NameUniversity of California Santa Cruz

Position TitlePostdoctoral Scholar

Company Information

UC Santa Cruz is one of 10 campuses in the University of California system and is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an association of the top research universities in the US. The Statistics Department (STAT) is part of the Baskin School of Engineering and has a stellar reputation for its dynamism and innovation in interdisciplinary research. Our school has nationally and internationally known researchers in many areas. Baskin Engineering is home to six departments contributing to the richness of its research in materials, devices and instruments; engineering mathematics; computing; and health engineering. With a rich history of embracing groundbreaking interdisciplinary work and building deep research ties with industry, the UCSC residential campus is nestled in a redwood forest above the city of Santa Cruz, while the nearby Santa Clara campus in Silicon Valley affords unique and exciting opportunities for collaboration with industry researchers, as well as with faculty and students at other San Francisco Bay Area universities.

Duties and Responsibilities

We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary project at the intersection of oceanography, statistics, and machine learning, led by collaborators at the University of California Santa Cruz and the University of Washington. The postdoc will be jointly supervised by Dr. Sangwon Hyun and Dr. Paul A. Parker, working with large-scale marine flow cytometry datasets to develop and apply novel statistical machine learning methods for dependent, high-dimensional data. This position offers the opportunity to contribute both methodological advances in AI/statistics and fundamental discoveries in marine microbial ecology, while working in a highly collaborative team. The successful candidate will gain strong interdisciplinary training, contribute to open-source software, and help shape next-generation tools for analyzing complex dependent data with broad applicability beyond oceanography.

Position Qualifications

• PhD (completed or near completion) in Statistics or a closely related field
• A demonstrated interest or experience in working with real-world datasets is essential
• Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas:
o Spatial and/or spatio-temporal modeling
o Bayesian hierarchical modeling
o Deep learning and/or neural networks
o Statistical machine learning
o High-dimensional data analysis
o Computational statistics
• Strong programming skills in R or Python
