Macalester College – Assistant Professor of Statistics

Company Information: The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) at Macalester College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Statistics to begin Fall 2026. At Macalester College, diversity, equity, and inclusion have long been central to our educational mission and values. In this spirit, the MSCS department prides itself on our innovative and inclusive Statistics curriculum and pedagogy (e.g. active learning, real world applications, computing in R). We offer majors and minors in each of Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science, and a new hire would join a team of five other tenured / tenure-track Statistics faculty. Our faculty embrace the rich multidisciplinary, collegial, and collaborative nature of our joint department. In addition to pedagogical and curricular innovation, we value undergraduate research mentoring and outreach to the vibrant Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan community. We foster close interdisciplinary relationships with departments outside MSCS and teach more than 60% of the student body in our introductory Statistics course.

Position Title: Assistant Professor of Statistics

Duties and Responsibilities: Macalester faculty teach five semester course sections per year (typically two to three distinct courses), supervise senior capstone presentations and honors theses, advise students in their curricular and career choices, maintain an active scholarly agenda, and engage in pedagogical, curricular, and extracurricular departmental activities. During their first year of the appointment, new faculty teach four course sections (typically two distinct courses) and attend a weekly new faculty development seminar.

Position Qualifications: Candidates must have or be completing a Ph.D. in Statistics or Biostatistics, or a closely related field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, etc. with a demonstrated interest and background in Statistics. They must have a strong commitment to and vision for excellence in teaching and research in an undergraduate liberal arts environment. We are especially interested in candidates who are enthusiastic to teach and develop a broad range of undergraduate Statistics courses, from the introductory to advanced level. Current course descriptions are available in the MSCS course catalog (https://www.macalester.edu/mscs/courses/). We are open to scholarly interests from a wide range of areas, including but not limited to: advanced statistical modeling, statistical machine learning, computational statistics, and data science.

Salary Range: $94,000-97,000, depending upon experience
