Aix-Marseille Université – 3-year research engineer (IGR) in Statistics and Machine Learning (funded by Amidex)

Position Title: 3-year research engineer (IGR) in Statistics and Machine Learning (funded by Amidex)
Duties and Responsibilities: Applications are invited for a three-year full time research engineer position starting in September-October 2025 in the A*MIDEX Chaire d'Excellence-funded project “Nonstationary Models of Biological Signals” (NOMOS), Principal Investigator Prof. Anna Dudek. According to the requirements of this funding program, candidates should not be currently employed by the University Aix-Marseille and should have obtained their last degree outside AMU. Interviews with candidates will be conducted in English. The selection process will proceed on a continuous basis, with applications reviewed and interviews conducted until the position is filled.
Nonstationary signals are at the forefront of modern statistical analysis, as many observed phenomena cannot be adequately modeled by stationary processes. The NOMOS project aims to develop a new generation of nonstationary models and algorithms for analyzing various biological signals. The project will focus mainly on developing innovative models for biomedical signals and exploring potential machine learning applications.
A key objective of this position is to contribute to the preparation of high-quality research publications arising from collaborative projects with other laboratories at Aix-Marseille Université (AMU), including ILCB, SESSTIM, and INMED. The successful candidate will support these interdisciplinary teams by proposing, implementing, and interpreting statistical and machine learning (ML) methodologies.
The position requires both technical expertise and the ability to communicate analytical approaches and findings effectively to researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including those without formal training in mathematics or data science.
Main responsibilities:
• Collaborate with partner laboratories to understand scientific objectives and data-related needs
• Prepare, clean, and curate complex datasets for analysis
• Design and implement statistical and machine learning pipelines suited to the research questions
• Conduct statistical modeling, inference, and simulation studies
• Develop, test, and refine computational algorithms and predictive models
• Create clear and informative visualizations and interactive dashboards
• Present analytical results in a manner accessible to non-specialist audiences
• Contribute substantively to the writing of scientific articles, grant proposals, and technical reports
• Perform literature reviews to inform methodological choices and contextualize results
• Write, optimize, and maintain code for statistical and ML applications
• Ensure rigorous documentation of methodologies, analytical procedures, and outcomes
Position Qualifications: Profile: strong background in statistics and machine learning methods (PhD in statistics or machine learning is a plus), very good skills in R and/or Python. Duration: 32 months. Full time.
