School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Melbourne, Australia – Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Company Information: We are recruiting a Postdoc/Research Fellow in statistics, machine learning, or bioinformatics, focusing on developing computational methods for complex and large-scale biological data analysis (e.g., single-cell/spatial multi-omics data analysis) at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

The position offers considerable flexibility in project scope and skillsets, and we encourage applicants with diverse backgrounds across computational biology, machine learning, statistics, and bioinformatics to apply.

This position is based at School of Maths and Stats, the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Mathematical Analysis of Cellular Systems (MACSYS, https://macsys.org/, the world’s largest focused research initiative in mathematical biology) and the Melbourne Integrative Genomics (MIG, https://sites.research.unimelb.edu.au/integrative-genomics, an interdisciplinary research centre advancing the role of statisticians, mathematicians, and bioinformaticians in genomics and computational biology).

Position Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Duties and Responsibilities: In this role, you will be required to:

You are expected to significantly contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop your research expertise with an increasing degree of autonomy

Develop and apply advanced data analysis and computational techniques to extract valuable insights and patterns from large-scale biological datasets

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to exchange ideas and leverage complementary expertise in biology, statistics, mathematics, and computational science

Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation of all methods, data analyses, and findings for future reference and knowledge sharing

Position Qualifications: You may be a great fit if:

We are looking for an early career academic with a strong foundation in statistics, data science or a related discipline, combined with advanced computational skills. With a growing publication track record and a clear ambition to build a research career, you are confident preparing high-quality research outputs and engaging with collaborators across academia and industry.

You may also:

Completion (or near completion) of a PhD in statistics, data science, computational biology, or a related discipline

Strong background in statistics, data science, AI/ML, or bioinformatics

Strong computational skills

Experience in biological data science, including the application of quantitative methods to biological data analysis

A demonstrated aptitude for research, with a sound publication record in relevant areas, commensurate with experience and opportunities

Demonstrated ability to prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication

Strong evidence of ability and desire to build an academic research career trajectory

Demonstrated ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships

Salary Range: Level A – $83,468 – $113,262 p.a. plus 17% super (PhD entry level $105,518 p.a.)
