Position Title: Lecturer
Duties and Responsibilities: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (www.math.umass.edu) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks an academic-year (9-month), full-time lecturer with expertise in mathematics or statistics. Although the initial appointment is for a fixed term of one-year, the position has the potential for an open-ended appointment after four years of full-time service. Lecturers at UMass Amherst enjoy significant benefits and status under the negotiated faculty contract (see Article 21 of the MSP/MTA/NEA contract linked on this page: http://www.umass.edu/provost/faculty-staff-resources/policies-contracts). The lecturer will join a team of faculty noted for excellence and innovation in undergraduate education. The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate-level. They will work with faculty and advising staff to assess student outcomes and foster student success.
Position Qualifications: A Master's in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field is required. Ideally, candidates will have experience in teaching mathematics or statistics in an active learning environment; be knowledgeable of course design, assessment methods and teaching strategies and be skilled at implementing best practices in the use of emerging pedagogical applications.
Desired skills and experience include at least one of the following: Development of actuarial courses and ability to help run the undergrad actuarial program (experience in the Actuarial field a big plus); ability to lecture to large (250-student) classes and chair multi-section classes in the lower-division, from developmental math courses to linear algebra and differential equations; supporting departmental programs to train teaching assistants; experience/interest in working with faculty to improve the secondary math education concentration; experience/interest in teaching Mathematics content courses for future elementary teachers; supporting departmental efforts for implementation of student-centered teaching practices, ability to teach a variety of Statistics courses.
A Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, or a closely related field is preferred.
