Dept of Biostatistics, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health – PK Sen Visiting Distinguished Professor

Company Information: The Department of Biostatistics (BIOS) is internationally recognized as a leader in Biostatistics research and training. It is one of eight departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health whose mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of the population. This mission is accomplished through the interaction of teaching, research and service. The department is one of the largest, most complex departments on campus. For FY19, Biostatistics, was 4th among all departments and centers across campus in research funding at UNC Chapel Hill and currently has almost 300 employees. The Department operates a $46 million sponsored research budget (FY19), a 1.7-million-dollar state budget, a 1.0-million-dollar F&A budget and spends roughly 3.0 million in trust funds annually. The Department has 55 EHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty members, 74 permanent staff members and 162 temporary employees. The Department has 235 students (184 graduate students and 51 undergraduate students). The Department of Biostatistics is housed in three different locations: administrative and faculty offices, including a suite of offices for graduate students in McGavran-Greenberg Hall and the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC) at Carolina Square.

Position Title: PK Sen Visiting Distinguished Professor

Duties and Responsibilities: The Department of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) is seeking to recruit one or two aspiring international scholars in statistical science for the Pranab K. Sen Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Biostatistics. The positions for periods up to five months are for fall or spring semesters beginning in January or August 2026. Preference will be given to applicants from low and middle income countries and to those who provide a plan of proposed research. The visiting faculty will come from an area of statistical science, broadly defined, including bioinformatics and data science, to UNC-CH to conduct research, possibly teach, and interact with faculty, students, and the university community. The major benefit will be an intensive interaction of the visitor’s strong methodology background with applications to interdisciplinary research or teaching underway at UNC-CH. The visiting professorship, at the assistant, associate or full professor level, offers salary support commensurate with the rank.
Financial support for other expenses is negotiable. Ideally, the visiting scholar will return to his or her home country for at least one year upon completing the appointment to further expand the reach of interdisciplinary work begun in Chapel Hill. Applicants should hold a PhD in statistics or biostatistics or have commensurate educational background.
