Department Information: The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics offers majors in Mathematics, Mathematics Teaching, Computer Science, and Statistics and graduates an average of 35 students per year. Among the 10 faculty, the department is home to three statisticians with varied research interests. In addition to the statistics major, the statistics minor is popular with students across campus, including those majoring in Economics, Finance, Management, Biology, Psychology and others. It is the philosophy of the Department that the skills of analytical thinking and logical argument, combined with the ability to communicate effectively, form the core of a solid liberal arts education in the mathematical sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities

Things you will do:

Teach 6 course sections during the academic year. Typically, 3 in the Fall and 3 in the Spring. Two of the sections in Fall and/or Spring may be the same course. Primary teaching responsibilities may/will include introductory statistics and courses dependent on the applicant qualifications and area of expertise.
Help cultivate a welcoming community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We strive to foster an environment where people can be themselves, build community, learn, and grow.

Things you can choose to do:

Improve your teaching by joining a teaching circle, participating in workshops, applying for an internal teaching development grant, and engaging in conversations about teaching with colleagues across campus.
Advance your scholarship by working with undergraduate research assistants, joining a writing retreat, applying for an internal grant, receiving travel funds to present at conferences, receiving help applying for external grants, and making use of our research facilities.
Develop professional skills by participating in faculty meetings and committees, attending faculty development days, and taking advantage of the College’s membership to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).

Position Qualifications

What’s required:

MA or MS in Statistics/Biostatistics/Data Science or a related field
Experience with R/RStudio

What’s preferred:

PhD in Statistics/Biostatistics/Data Science or related field (or ABD)
Evidence of effectiveness in teaching
Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate students
Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities
Experience teaching introductory statistics
Experience teaching utilizing R/RStudio
