UTMB was established in 1891 as the first academic health center in Texas and is a component of the University of Texas System. Today UTMB includes five schools (medicine, nursing, health professions, graduate biomedical sciences, and public and population health), a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, and numerous research facilities.
The city of Galveston is a popular tourist and cruise ship destination that includes beaches, museums, historical architecture, a vibrant arts community, and excellent restaurants, all located only 45 minutes away from Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city.

Duties and Responsibilities

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB Health) is recruiting an Assistant Professor (Biostatistics) to join the faculty in the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science). The mission of our department is to apply biostatistics and data science expertise toward improving health and function and reducing health inequities across communities. The school administers graduate programs in Public Health (MPH), Population Health Sciences (PhD), Rehabilitation Sciences (PhD), Bioethics and Health Humanities (MA, PhD), and Biostatistics (MS); it also trains medical students and residents on topics in prevention and public health. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to these educational activities including teaching and mentoring graduate and medical students. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty group that engages in research, clinical and community service, and the teaching of graduate students and medical and other health professions trainees.
The successful applicant will play an active role in teaching and mentoring of graduate and medical students, and conducting and publishing research. All biostatisticians at UTMB Health are members of the Office of Biostatistics and provide collaborative support throughout the research community. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff members who have considerable expertise in the analysis of large data sets from disease registries, administrative databases, and epidemiological surveys.

Position Qualifications

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH) in biostatistics or statistics with at least 3 years of related experience. Preferred qualifications include statistical or data science consulting and substantial classroom teaching experience. Consideration will be given to individuals with experience in conducting Comparative Effectiveness Research/Patient Centered Outcomes Research using electronic medical record data from hospitals or health systems.
