The College of Health Solutions is committed to translating scientific health research and discovery into practice to improve health outcomes through education, research and service. We equip students with the knowledge and skills to influence healthier lifestyle choices; develop creative interventions to improve the health of people and populations; analyze and translate large amounts of health data into solutions; and maximize the technology, science, business and application of diagnostics. Our research programs encompass basic science, discovery science, clinical trials, intervention science and measurement of health outcomes. In all cases, our faculty use interdisciplinary approaches to address the complex systems that underpin health problems. We are highly collaborative, transparent and team-oriented. Our innovative organizational structure includes translational teams that move science from labs into communities with evidence-based interventions that make a difference, as well as affinity networks where teams of people work together to improve methodologies and processes. All of our programs, in and out of the classroom, are designed with the goal of improving the health of people and communities.
Current training programs include behavioral health, biomedical diagnostics, biomedical informatics, exercise science, health promotion, health sciences, kinesiology, medical studies, nutrition, population health, the science of health care delivery, and speech and hearing science. Our programs are offered at ASU’s Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Polytechnic, West and Lake Havasu campuses, as well as on Mayo Clinic’s campus in north Phoenix. We maintain research facilities in cooperation with multiple community partners, including an expansion of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus that is in development through a public-private partnership that will increase collaborative opportunities with private companies and offer an additional 200,000 square feet of space for research and clinical trials.

Duties and Responsibilities

The College of Health Solutions (CHS) at Arizona State University (ASU) is seeking a full-time, 9-month tenure-eligible faculty member in Population Health Informatics at the rank of Associate Professor. We seek exceptional candidates with a focused research agenda and teaching experience related to the application of informatics and data science methods to improve population health. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated expertise in the design, collection, execution, and analysis of studies involving multiple types and sources of health-related data, including genomic, molecular, biological, behavioral, social, digital, epidemiologic, or environmental to address important population health outcomes (with particular emphasis on addressing the needs of underserved populations).

Population health informatics is a rapidly evolving area. Therefore, we encourage applicants that have demonstrated they can think outside the box, challenge existing schema and disciplinary orientations, and are willing to rapidly move in new directions. Candidates must have experience engaging in team-based science, and we welcome candidates from diverse disciplinary backgrounds including engineering, arts and media, technology, and design. The incumbent in this position will have great potential to take a leadership role within CHS and ASU as we continue to build our Population Health Informatics program.

Examples of faculty candidate’s focus areas include:
● Applied informatics and data science/analytics, with an emphasis on utilizing informatics theories, methods, and tools to improve population health outcomes
● Informatics-focused models and/or advanced analytic methods that address health disparities and access to health and healthcare
● Design, integration, and analysis of multi-modal and multi-scale data relevant to population health such as genetic, phenotype, clinical, behavioral, sensor and mobile device, and/or environmental health data
● Novel approaches designing and evaluating digital health and telehealth interventions
This position will work with faculty across the college to address our Grand Challenges, complex and difficult health problems which require translational research, transformative collaboration and innovation. Through research, academic programs and service, the college is focused on these Grand Challenges: Addressing the systems of health care and the health needs of populations, and optimizing health and human performance of individuals across the lifespan. We are particularly interested in making an impact on populations with significant health disparities. We welcome applications from candidates whose scholarship complements the existing expertise within the College of Health Solutions (https://chs.asu.edu/faculty-research). In addition, we encourage research collaborations with investigators from diverse academic fields and with community partners.

Responsibilities for this position include developing and maintaining a successful research program, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring students and junior faculty, and providing service to the program and university as well as to the community and profession. The ideal candidate will present evidence of a successful research trajectory commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor, including sustained extramural funding and peer-reviewed publications, and a strong commitment to high quality teaching and mentoring.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications
• Doctorate or terminal degree (PhD, ScD, MD/DO, or DrPH) in an informatics-related discipline, including biomedical informatics, population or health informatics, clinical/medical informatics, information and communication technology, health communication and informatics, public health, or similar
• Expertise in using genomic, molecular, biological, behavioral, social, epidemiologic, environmental data sources to address population health outcomes
• Expertise applying data science/analytic methods in one or more dataset types including electronic health records, biobank, wearable devices, administrative claims, telehealth, or clinical decision support data
• Evidence of successful extramural funding through federal mechanisms (e.g. NIH, CDC, AHRQ, SAMHSA, etc.) and/or foundations (e.g., Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), commensurate with the rank of associate professor
• Evidence of recent peer reviewed publications in high-impact journals, commensurate with the rank of associate professor
• Experience with analytic software packages e.g. SPSS, SAS, R, Python, STATA
• Evidence of successful teaching of courses in population health informatics, statistics or related fields at the university level, commensurate with the rank of associate professor
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of colleagues, students, and staff
• Demonstrated ability to utilize large data sets and medical records for comparative analyses

Desired Qualifications
Experience teaching graduate and undergraduate level courses
Experience teaching online university courses
Experience mentoring graduate students in research including authorship of peer-reviewed journal publications
Experience developing and maintaining community partnerships and inter-professional and/or team-based collaborations
Experience translating research into real world outcomes in homes and communities, addressing the needs of underserved populations, and using informatics methods to better understand the complex systems that impact the health of populations
Background, knowledge, and/or research in population health informatics relevant to the needs of the Arizona's diverse populations
Demonstrated success in promoting student retention and/or graduation
Evidence of participation in translational, trans-disciplinary, and team science initiatives relevant to CHS research domains
Evidence of active involvement in university service commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor
