About the College of Health Solutions

The College of Health Solutions is committed to translating scientific health research and discovery into practice to improve health outcomes through education, research and service. We equip students with the knowledge and skills to influence healthier lifestyle choices; develop creative interventions to improve the health of people and populations; analyze and translate large amounts of health data into solutions; and maximize the technology, science, business and application of diagnostics. Our research programs encompass basic science, discovery science, clinical trials, intervention science and measurement of exposures and health outcomes. In all cases, our faculty use interdisciplinary approaches to address the complex systems that underpin health problems. We are highly collaborative, transparent and team-oriented. Our innovative organizational structure includes translational teams that move science from labs into communities with evidence-based interventions that make a difference, as well as affinity networks where teams of people work together to improve methodologies and processes. All of our programs, in and out of the classroom, are designed with the goal of improving the health of people and communities. The Biostatistics Core at the College of Health Solutions (CHS) is a collaborative research unit that provides a variety of services from grant proposal support to data analyses and manuscript preparation. The main mission of the Biostatistics Core is to enhance the research capabilities in the College and address the critical biostatistical methodological and analytical needs of any research project in CHS, the university, and the community.
Current training programs in the College of Health Solutions include behavioral health, biomedical diagnostics, biomedical informatics, exercise science, health promotion, health sciences, kinesiology, medical studies, nutrition, population health, the science of health care delivery, and speech and hearing science. Our programs are offered at ASU’s Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Polytechnic, West and Lake Havasu campuses, as well as on Mayo Clinic’s campus in north Phoenix. We maintain research facilities in cooperation with multiple community partners, including an expansion of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus that is in development through a public-private partnership that will increase collaborative opportunities with private companies and offer an additional 200,000 square feet of space for research and clinical trials.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions (CHS) is seeking three full-time, 9-month tenure-eligible/tenured faculty members at the rank of Assistant, Associate and/or Full Professor in the area of biostatistics to join the CHS Biostatistics Core, and to establish a new Academic Program in Biostatistics. The anticipated start date is Fall 2021. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with a strong potential (Assistant Professor level) or track record (Associate/Full Professor level) in developing and applying new biostatistical methodologies in basic, clinical or population science, and applied interdisciplinary biomedical and collaborative research. The successful candidates will have a strong independent research portfolio in a relevant area of study, strong potential for contributing to team science efforts at CHS and the wider ASU community, and/or for developing close collaborations with CHS investigators, and strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring. As members of the Biostatistics Core, these faculty will be expected to spend certain time effort providing biostatistical support (e.g., designing experiments, developing novel analytical approaches, participating in grant applications and publication efforts) to CHS and ASU faculty and collaborators. The candidate for the Associate/Full Professor position should have demonstrated a strong leadership potential, and is anticipated to assume a director role of the Biostatistics Core. An initial contribution for these positions is establishing a new Academic Program in Biostatistics along with developing a PhD and MS degrees in Biostatistics. Teaching and mentoring at undergraduate and graduate level is an expectation. Faculty will have opportunities to design courses that align with their research expertise.
The positions will work with faculty across the college to address our Grand Challenges, complex and difficult health problems, which require translational research, transformative collaboration, and innovation. Through research, academic programs and service, the college is focused on these Grand Challenges: Addressing the systems of health care and the health needs of populations, and optimizing health and human performance of individuals across the lifespan. We are particularly interested in making an impact on populations with significant health disparities. We welcome applications from candidates whose scholarship complements the existing expertise within the College of Health Solutions ( In addition, we encourage research collaborations with investigators from diverse academic fields and with community partners.

Responsibilities for these positions include developing and maintaining a successful research program, contributing to the mission of the Biostatistics Core, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring students and faculty (depending on rank), and providing service to the program and university as well as to the community and profession. The ideal candidate will present evidence of a successful research trajectory commensurate with the rank of Assistant, Associate of Full Professor, including a sustained extramural funding and peer-reviewed publications, and a strong commitment to high quality teaching and mentoring.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Assistant/Associate/Full Professor
• Doctorate or terminal degree (PhD, ScD) in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, or related field (e.g., mathematics, data science)
• Evidence of a strong potential or successful history of obtaining extramural funding as a PI or Co-I to support a robust research portfolio commensurate with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor
• Evidence of a sustained history of peer reviewed publications in high-impact journals
commensurate with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor
• Demonstrated ability to independently perform analyses using existing biostatistics and computational techniques and concepts to support their research portfolio and to support faculty and collaborators with the design of experiments, statistical methodology, analysis and publication efforts.
• Evidence of successful university teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and course development related to the field of biostatistics commensurate with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of students, colleagues, and staff
Associate/Full Professor
● Evidence of successful student mentorship in research and publishing.
● Evidence of curriculum development, leading graduate programs, and teaching at the Masters and PhD level

Desired Qualifications

● Evidence of a successful history of obtaining extramural funding from highly competitive sources such as NIH, PCORI, CDC, NSF, similar federal mechanisms, and/or foundations (e.g., Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)
● Evidence of contributions to multidisciplinary collaborative projects or research centers
● Demonstrated proficiency in statistical software, e.g., R, SAS, STATA, as well as knowledge of data science modeling
● Experience with development of graduate level academic programs in biostatistics
● Background, knowledge, and/or research in the area of biostatistics relevant to the needs of the Arizona's diverse populations and the college's Grand Challenges
● Evidence of participation in translational, trans-disciplinary, and team science initiatives relevant to CHS research domains
● Experience in developing and maintaining community partnerships and inter-professional or team-based collaborations
● Evidence of impact of research
● Experience developing & teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses and mentoring graduate students in research and publishing
● Experience teaching online courses at the University level
● Demonstrated success in promoting student retention and/or graduation
