Position TitleAssistant or Associate Professor in Statistics

Company Information

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is dedicated to providing quality instruction and research in the mathematical and statistical sciences. We embrace the challenge of teaching mathematics to students with a wide variety of backgrounds, abilities and needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at Arizona State University invites applications for a tenure-eligible position in statistics at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with experience. Anticipated start date is fall 2020. The Division of Statistics and Data Science is a semi-autonomous unit within SoMSS and currently contains eight faculty members and the University intends to increase the size and scope of this division significantly within the next few years. The expanded statistics group will be expected to increase its interdisciplinary, applied and core research productivity, and foster growth in its teaching programs. In addition, the Division of Statistics and Data Science will play a key role in a new undergraduate degree program in data science (along with applied mathematics and computer science), which is scheduled to start in fall 2020. The Division of Statistics and Data Science has close ties with the applied and computational mathematics group and is very involved with interdisciplinary research.

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS, math.asu.edu) at ASU is currently home to about 60 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, 60 instructional faculty, 12 postdoctoral associates, 190 graduate students, 760 undergraduate student majors, and 20 staff members. The School offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs in statistics, applied mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics education, as well as undergraduate and masters programs in actuarial science. SoMSS has a strongly interdisciplinary research profile that includes numerous collaborations inside and outside the university, such as in the biological, environmental, medical, physical and social sciences, education, and multiple areas of engineering. The escalating interest in data science research throughout ASU will offer further opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The essential duties of the position will be to conduct research on statistical theory, methodology, or applications, publish in appropriate high-quality journals, provide quality teaching and mentoring in our undergraduate and graduate programs, and participate in appropriate professional service, which includes mentoring of our graduate students.
